Glasgow: the Welcoming City
Programme illustration by Netta Ewing depicts Grace pouring into the heart and goodness pouring out of it. The water of baptism is shown with the fire of the Holy Spirit and the fish, representing Christ. The vibrant use of colours of the rainbow reflect the creative spirit of ordinary Man and the covenant of Noah between God and Man.
This year’s Glasgow: the Welcoming City event took place in the City Chambers on Sunday, June 13, celebrating the life of Glasgow through word, music, and song with its churches and ‘new Glaswegians’.
The afternoon marked three important events:
- the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the Benedictine monastery of Cluny in 910;
- the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation in 1560;
- the centenary of the World Missionary Conference held in 1910 and marked by the Edinburgh 2010 conference earlier this month.
Among those taking part were the Salvation Army’s Rutherglen band, Clarsachs and the SouthSide Fiddlers, the St Mungo Singers and the Scottish Asian Christian Fellowship.
There was a welcome from Bailie Catherine McMaster on behalf of the Lord Provost, a drama written by Stephen Callaghan of Lentfest, and an address from Br Stephen Smyth fms, general secretary of Action of Churches Together in Scotland.
