The Scottish ecumenical body Action of Churches Together in Scotland has appointed Church of Scotland minister Rev Matthew Ross as its next General Secretary. He will take up the post on 1 April 2014.
Mr Ross is currently a parish minister at Cockpen and Carrington in Midlothian and is a member of the Church of Scotland’s Church and Society Council and Ecumenical Relations Committee.
His wide ecumenical experience includes six years in Brussels as Executive Secretary of the Church and Society Commission of the CEC (Conference of European Churches).
He succeeds Br Stephen Smyth, a former ecumenical officer of Glasgow Churches T0gether.
Mr Ross was born in Dundee in 1967. After graduating with a law degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1990 he spent three years working in political research (partly in the British Parliament in London). In 1993 he returned to the University of Edinburgh to study theology.
He was ordained as a minister in 1998 and was minister at Ceres and Springfield Parish Church, consisting of two rural village congregations north of Edinburgh. In 2002 and 2003 he also served as acting Depute Clerk to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He also completed a Master of Theology degree at the University of Glasgow
