Steve Huyton steps down
Major Steve Huyton stood down as Chair of Glasgow Churches Together at today’s executive committee meeting. He and his wife, Major Margaret Huyton, will leave Rutherglen in July to be officers and ministers to the Salvation Army in Maldon, Essex.
A farewell cake for Maj Steve Huyton, who's joined by Greta Doig, Elizabeth McGettrick, Mary Bradley and Fr David Wallace
Steve will also serve as County Ecumenical Officer for the Salvation Army in Churches Together in Essex and East London (CTEEL).
Major Bruce Smith, currently serving in Airdrie, has been named Divisional Ecumenical Officer for Glasgow and so will join the Glasgow Churches Together committee.
Major Huyton is succeeded as Chair by Monsignor Gerry Fitzpatrick. He said: “I’d like to express our gratitude to Steve for his love of the Salvation Army, his enthusiasm for the churches, and for the genial way in which he has steered us during his time in office.”
During his five years in Scotland, Major Huyton’s ecumenical role has seen him travelling to Dunblane and Edinburgh for ACTS’ Church Life Network and Scottish Bible Society meetings in addition to his GCT role.
He told ACTS’ Together magazine: ““Whilst we have enjoyed two previous appointments in Scotland, these past five years have given me a special insight into the different dynamics between the English model of Local, Intermediary (County level) and National levels as opposed to the Scottish two tier of local and national.
“Many English counties have more ecumenical partnerships that we do in the whole of Scotland; however the depth of mutual trust and co-operation amongst the denominations is something special.
“True, we could look to across the border for examples of good practice, but in many other ways the Scottish ecumenical scene has much to be celebrated.”
