Christians mark Eastertide with Walks of Witness

Walk of Witness by G52 Churches in 2010

Hundreds of Christians will make a public statement of their faith at Eastertide – mainly on Good Friday, April 22, 2011 – by taking part in Walks of Witness in and around Glasgow. Several are listed below. If you have information about others, please email office@glasgowchurches.org.uk.

Baillieston: Good Friday
Baillieston Churches Together have a Good Friday Walk of Witness at 11 am starting at the Baillieston traffic lights.

Clydebank Churches Together: Good Friday
Walk of Witness from Faifley Parish Church to Three Queens Square at Clydebank shopping centre, leaving at 10 am, concluding with a Witness Service in the Square at 11 am.

Cumbernauld: Good Friday
Walk of Witness starts at 11 am at Sacred Heart RC Church, proceeding to Kildrum Parish Church of Scotland, Holy Name Episcopal Church, Cornerstone Church (affiliated to the Church of Scotland) and finally to the United Reformed Church. The Walk takes participants through the main thoroughfares in Cumbernauld, past Asda and through the Town Centre, with a police escort. At each church there will be a reading and  hymns, and at the conclusion the United Reformed Church will provide tea/coffee and biscuits. The event usually finishes about 1 pm, in time for other services in individual churches.

Glasgow City Centre: Good Friday

  • Gathering: 10.30am George Square.
  • Route:  St.Vincent Street, Hope Street, Bath Street, Elmbank Street, St.Vincent Street, St. Vincent Terrace.
  • Finish: Anderston Kelvingrove Church, St. Vincent Terrace, 12.15pm.
  • Prayer Stations:  George Square, Bath Street (Robert Owen House), Bath Street (Renfield St Stephen’s), Elmbank Street,  St Vincent Terrace.
  • This is intended to be a walk of witness, not a protest march, please carry a cross with you. We will walk from the heart of the city to the edge of its commercial district. Come and join us, it is a wonderful opportunity to bear witness to our faith in a open, prayerful, public procession.
  • Organised by an The City Centre Ecumenical Group: Adelaide Place Baptist, St Aloysius RC, Anderston Kelvingrove, Glasgow Cathedral, Quaker Meeting House and Renfield St.Stephen’s,

Glasgow East End: Palm Sunday and Good Friday
Walk of Witness leaves High Carntyne Church at 12.40 on Palm Sunday and proceeds from Carntyne Square, Abbeyhill Street, Ledburn Street, Edinburgh Road, Glencorse Street and onto Carntyne Road, finishing at St Bernadette’s RC Church where there will be a short ecumenical service. On Good Friday the Cross is brought back Carntyne Road to High Carntyne Church where an ecumenical service will be held at 11 am followed by a lunch  in the halls.

Glasgow G52 (Cardonald area): Good Friday
Walk of Witness begins at 10.30 am with an opening gathering at Our Lady and St George’s RC Church in Hillington South Road,walking along Paisley Road West to the closing service at Hillington Park Parish Church, Berryknowes Road, where participants are welcome to gather in advance if they are unable to take part in the Walk.

Glasgow Milton: Good Friday
Beginning at St Augustine’s Church in Ashgill Road (G22 7HN) at 11 am, the walk will pass the Methodist Church and finish at Colston Milton in Egilsay Crescent (G22 7PT), followed  by bread and soup.

Glasgow Shettleston: Good Friday
The Emmaus Group in Shettleston have organised a Walk of Witness starting at St Paul’s RC Church at 11 a.m. and walking down Shettleston Road to St Barnabas RC Church in Darleith Street. We have a police escort to stop the traffic for us as we walk on the main road. We have about five stops along the way where there is an open space on a grassy patch to have a Bible reading.

Kirkintilloch-Lenzie: Good Friday
Gathering at 11 am at Old Farmer’s Market, opposite Freeland Place next to Sainsbury’s. (If starting from Lenzie, gathering at 10.15 am at Lenzie Old Church, proceeding to Lenzie Union, St Cyprian’s and then to Freeland Place). The Walk will end with a short service in the church of the Holy Family and St Ninian’s followed by a time of fellowship in the hall with tea and coffee.

Vale of Leven: Good Friday
Action of Churches Together in the Vale will be doing their usual Walk of Witness, starting at St Mungo’s Episcopal Church at 11am and ending at Our
Lady & St Mark’s Church at noon. We walk through Alexandria town centre, stopping several times for reading, prayer and hymns.
