Rev Dr David Pickering has been appointed as the next moderator of the United Reformed Church National Synod of Scotland.

The URC’s Mission Council affirmed David’s nomination when it met on 13-15 November.

David is currently the minister at St Andrew’s URC, Roundhay, Leeds, where he has served since 2004.

He was seconded between 1999 and 2004 to serve with Churches Together in Britain & Ireland‘s Eco-Congregation Award Project.

David was ordained as a minister in 1990 and served until 1999 with the URC’s North Teesside Group.

He has a personal interest in Christianity in the early medieval period in the Hebrides.

In summer 2012, David led a pilgrimage to the Hebrides, visiting sites of Christian worship on Bute, Islay, Jura, Eilean Mor and Iona

In summer 2014, a second pilgrimage entitled “Along the Atlantic Edge” visited sites on Canna, Raasay, North Uist, South Uist, Barra and Tiree.

David will succeed Rev John Humphreys in July 2016.

John has served as moderator since 2005 when he took over from Rev John Arthur, who had been the synod’s first moderator following the unification of the Scottish Congregational Church and the United Reformed Church in 2000.

David will be inducted as synod moderator at 2pm on Saturday 16 July 2016 at Giffnock United Reformed Church.
